What types of licenses are there for animal trading? What are the licensing requirements?

The licence stipulates that the licence holder must clearly display the licence in a conspicuous place within the licensed premises. The buyer can also contact the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to verify the validity of the licence.

Pet shop

Must hold Animal Trader Licence (ATL) to sell dogs and cats obtained from permitted sources on licensed premises (no breeding of cats or dogs).

Dog breeder

A person who keeps four or less female dogs on licensed premises for breeding purposes and sells those dogs or their offspring must hold Category A Dog Breeding Licence (DBLA).

A person who keeps five or more female dogs on licensed premises for breeding purposes and sells those dogs or their offspring must hold Category B Dog Breeding Licence (DBLB).

*Generally speaking, domestically bred cats do not need a licence for trading. Buyers need to be more careful!

Please consider adopting instead of buying!
