Considerations Before Purchasing Pets Online

Precautions and risks

As more and more citizens choose to keep pets to enhance their enjoyment of life, the market demand for various pets is also increasing.

Surveys have found that in addition to adopting or purchasing pets from licensed pet stores, many Hong Kong residents now use social media or online platforms to acquire pets. Among these, the number of scams involving claims of “home breeding” continues to rise, often involving unlicensed sales with no guarantees for the welfare of the animals.

Beware of "Petfishing Scams"

Unscrupulous pet sellers post misleading or false information about pets online to lure buyers into purchasing animals that are unhealthy or do not match the descriptions provided. Innocent citizens fall victim to these increasingly common “Petfishing scamsโ€. Buyers may suffer financial losses, and in severe cases, pets may become ill or even die shortly after being brought home. This leaves pet owners traumatised and emotionally devastated, grappling with both financial and psychological burdens. Moreover, these deceitful sellers often disappear once health issues arise with the pet, making it difficult for the buyer to seek accountability. These incidents highlight the potential risks of purchasing pets online.

Therefore, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department would like to remind the public to be aware of the risks involved in purchasing cats and dogs online, and to be careful to avoid being scammed.
